Bell's Shinty Battlefield
03 May 2010
Yesterday the Harps shinty team were playing for the top spot on the National First Division at Bell's Sports Centre in Perth. The game was a battle of the midfield and, all credit to Badenoch, on this occasion they won that battle, with a first class performance from Jane Nicol and Kirsty Deans.
The Harps defence stood up well to the Badenoch midfield firing power but a double deflection off-footed the Harps goalie at the end of the first half and the ball found its way to the bottom right corner of the goal.
The Harps were still in the game though and looked forward to a second half with the wind and slope in our favour, but we just couldn't secure the dominant hand. The Badenoch goalie was busier in the second half but that elusive goal just wouldn't come.
The game ended 1-0 and so the Harps now sit in second spot, 1 point behind the league leaders GMA. With only 3 of this season's 9 games played the league is still in our own hands.
The most positive part of the day was the debut of 3 new players; Erin, Hannah and Rebecca who all impressed. Erin's preparation for her first shinty game was a 5 minute puc about before the game, so her shinty playing career has now lasted 75 minutes and she only kicked the ball once. However it looks like she is up for adding shinty success to her camogie and footballing talents (Have a look at our 2009 Festival Photos to see her do the double at last year's Feile na mBan). So welcome to the Harps lassies, hope to be seeing lots more of you all.
