Grand Night for Shinty Teams
11 June 2009
First up on Wednesday night was the Harps' South team. The Harps put in one of the best South team performances of the season, but GMA came out all sticks blazing and the final result of 2 apiece was probably a fair reflection of the game.
Goal scoring honours go (as ever) to Alison Barclay, who is having a storming season in the front line and currently sits a mile ahead of the pack on the South Central Division Goal scorers table with 9 goals this season.
Coach's player of the match went to Janice Aitken, who denied GMA's goal attempts repeatedly and, never being afraid of using her best assets, put her belly to good use in providing an impassable barrier to the opposition on more than one occasion.
The South team still sit 4 points clear at the top of the table with only one team left who can deny them the first position spot. The first of the two Linlithgow ties is scheduled for August 2nd.
The national team seemed to have a slower start and found themselves 1 goal down early in the first half. However they absorbed the pressure and came out in the second half to give a brilliant performance. Fiona Mathie provided the two goals that sealed the tie but the GMA defence were under fire from all angles.
Aisling Gribbin was the coach's Player of the Match choice, in a game where there were some excellent performances and some stunning moments of skill on display from both sides.
The national league is still in our own hands. There are two games left to play and two wins will either secure the league title or force a play off with Glengarry for the title.
