Emergency Club Meeting 04 March 2010
Launch of Mini Bus Appeal
We are calling emergency club meeting which will be held in St. Fillan’s primary school, Crompton Avenue on Thursday 11th March, at 6.45pm. You will be aware that our seventeen seater club mini bus was destroyed by arsonists last week. At the time of writing we have not got a valuation from the insurers, but we have no doubt it will fall well short of its true value. In order for the club to prosper and for us to offer support to our coaches and the young people in the communities we work in the bus is essential. We are currently working on a plan of action to try to raise the money quickly to replace the bus immediately.
We are inviting all club members, parents, political representatives, supporters and sponsors to attend this meeting. If you would like to attend but have no transport we can hopefully offer you a lift to the venue from anywhere in the city.
Since the incident was reported we have been inundated with offers of help and messages of support. This will be covered more at the meeting but I can assure you it has fairly lifted the spirits of the club’s management committee.
Why you should come
We need your ideas
You may not be able to support financially but there are many other ways you can help.
You may not be able to give time but can make a donation. Please come along and find out how.
The club bus is your bus.
Please leave your contact details on 221 4553 if you require a lift to the meeting Mini Bus appeal off to a good start 01 March 2010 It's a long road ahead but the substantial shortfall in the insurers valuation and the cost of a new bus was cut by £500 on Sunday when the underage hurlers and camogs got a great response from the Glasgow public at a bag packing at Tesco in the east end. The club will be meeting soon to outline their plans to raise the shortfall. It already seems certain that the proceeds of their annual charity dinner in April which funds all of the club community development activities will now have to be set aside to finance the new bus. "It is disappointing that we have to go down this road as the dinner usually covers all of our coaching, equipment and youth leadership activities for the next twelve months, but the priority for us is transport. We are not set up like a traditional GAA club in Ireland. Our children are spread all over the city so transport is the key " explained the club chairman. Due to lack of games locally the bus is also used regularly to take teams over to Ireland for games. In the coming weeks the under 12 hurlers and under 10s footballers had planned to go on trips. These have now been shelved until the bus is replaced. Ulster Council Save The Day 01 March 2010 The club was able to go ahead with their support for the primary schools hurling tournament when the Ulster Council intervened following the destruction of thousands of pounds worth of hurling equipment in an arson attack on their club mini-bus outside a community transport base in the north of the city. The tournament at the city's Kelvin hall was the culmination of a coaching block in the schools run by Langside College's sports department as part of an HND sports coaching course. All of the students had been supported by the Scotland GAA's fulltime Community Development Administrator, Ciaran Kearney, who also ran a Foundation level Coaching course for them. "Within an hour of us discovering the bus was destroyed we had offers of help from both the Ulster Council and Croke Park. For this we will be forever grateful." commented club chiarman, Maurice Friel SKI Lessons for youth group 01 March 2010 This is a reminder that the ski lesson on Saturday will go ahead. We are looking for assistance with transport from parents. We have two female coaches to oversee the group , but would welcome a male adult to assist them. There are now only three more youth group place available on the lesson. To confirm your place either e-mail harps@live.ie or leave a message with your name on 221 4553.
The next youth get together willbe at Royston Youth Action, on Friday 12th March, at 7pm. Langside College Tournaments on this week 24 February 2010 Langside College are running their annual tournaments at the Kelvin Hall on Thursday 25th Feb (gaelic football) and the following day Friday 26th (hurling). Both will run from 11am-2pm. Club members are asked to go along and give the children plenty of encouragement. Our thank go to Ciaran Kearney for the work he done preparing the students to go out and coach in the schools and to the sports staff at langside College for giving us a platform to link to a new generation of players. Kildare club visit a great success 23 February 2010
Over fifty adults and children from the Sarsfields club from Newbridge had a great weekend in Glasgow as guests of the club. We appreciate the efforts of many who made the weekend such a success. We organised three matches with our visitors who emerged winners in two, with the third game a challenge with the teams mixed up between our children and our visitors. Our thanks go to Royston Youth Action who made their facilites available and organsied their kitchen staff to provide teas and much needed hot soup. That evening we had a welcome dance in St.Roch's parish hall. Again this well supported by a number of people who donated prizes or sold tickets. It was great to see so many young children turned out with the Tir Conaill colours. We had twenty six players togged out for the matches. The challenge now is to keep them involved in the club. However, the incentive of a visit to Kildare in May should help.
