Irish Music Scene do their bit for the Bus Appeal

12 May 2010

The Jakes, Slackjaw Gabbity, the Amadhans, Anarkali and the Wakes put their talent on show at the Admiral bar to raise £900 for the minibus appeal.

About 140 gig goers enjoyed a lively and varied performance, with something for everyone.

The club would like to say thanks to the bands for their support and to Danny Boyle for all his hard work in making the night a great success.

A full report on the night was carried in the Irish Post, see the "Glasgow Irish music community pull together in aid of GAA fundraising efforts " article by Mary McGinty.

Community Awards Night Packs Them in

28 April 2010

Just short of 450 people packed into the Crowne Plaza on Saturday for the club's annual awards dinner dance. The focus on this year's event was raising money for the Mini Bus Appeal.  The success of the evening means we are very close to securing the funds needed to replace the much needed vehicle.

Joe McAleer, centre, received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Kevin Porter, left. Also in the picture is local MSP, Bob Doris.

Lord Provost Charities Fund takes Appeal over £5,000

14 April 2010

Today Tir Conaill received an e-mail from the Lord Provost's Secretariat to advise that they are sending us a donation of £200 for our Minibus Appeal

Not only is this greatly appreciated by the club but it also is the donation that has taken us over the £5,000 mark.

This is a great achievement and our thanks go out to all who have supported this appeal, from both within and without the club.
All efforts are now going into our up and coming Club Awards Night on April 24th.

Only £7,000 to go!

Darius & Declan do Their Bit for the Bus

11 April 2010

The picture below doesn't quite do justice to the efforts of Darius & John.  If taken five minutes earlier they would have been surrounded by the river of Celtic supporters that were flowing towards Hampden.  Only to de delayed briefly by the lads giving out Minibus Appeal leaflets like the clappers.  In 40 minutes we gave out about 800 leaflets.

Now, for the supporter who insisted on giving us a donation on the street (I tried to refuse it, honest) with the words; "I will leave it to your conscious as to where the money goes".  Your donation is in the club funds and duly recorded on our Appeals page.  Thank you very much.  We hope that Darius & John's efforts will be rewarded by a few more like yours.

Three Women on a Stall

05 April 2010

The first visitors to our stall were Mr & Mrs MacDonald (Glengarry shinty club), who not only took a few leaflets for back home but also took the lovely photo of our hard working stall team.

During the rest of the afternoon we were visited by a number of the competitors from the Irish Dancing championships, a few more highland visitors, some visitors from further afield, a few Weegies (including a friendly Glasgow Gaels player) and Pat Bonnar (we think).

We hope that the information given out will raise the awareness of our Bus Appeal and also of the club as a whole, both in Glasgow and in elsewhere.

 Nomimate Your Club Hero

Club Achievement Awards 2009

Club members and parents are invited to submit nominations for the any of the achievement awards. You are asked to submit a short paragraph in support of your chosen candidate. Your support must reflect what the person achieved in the year 2009 only.  Please forward your nominations to harps@live.ie

John Porter Award

This award is made to the club volunteer of the year for 2009. We are seeking nominations of club members who have went beyond the call of duty over the past twelve months and have sacrificed their time, expertise and effort to shape the club we have now. We are especially inviting nominations for members whose effort was for the benefit of the entire club. This would epitomise the man that John was. In his time with the club he was chairman, coach, treasurer, sponsor and volunteer driver.

Young Person of the Year

No club can be sustained without its youth. The old cliché that young people are our future could not be closer to the truth when it comes to Tir Conaill Harps. This is not only on the field of play. We have many young people over the years who have volunteered to coach, help out at functions, fundraise or attend meetings. In more recent times they set up their own youth group. This award is for a twelve to eighteen year old who best personifies volunteerism. This could be volunteering at underage training, helping organise an event or being committed to their team by giving up their time to attend training and matches.

Coach of the Year
In many ways good players are born to be good. This is not taking away the effort that many have made to perfect their skills and reach a high standard, but coaches are different. You are not born into being a good coach. We can look back on many great games in our short history and of vital scores in games, but remembering who managed or coached the team might not spring to mind as easy. We now feel it’s time to put that right by recognising the voluntary effort of our coaches and managers. This award is not only for those who bring home silverware, although achievement on the field of play should not be minimised. We also want to recognise coaches who put a lot of work into a team, which has in turn shown significant improvement or it may indeed be the way they conduct a training sessions. We can all relate to stories of parents who have commented on the feeling of high self esteem and confidence coming from their children as a result of being involved in the club and more importantly because of the influence of their coach.

We have a limited number of single seats which can be booked @ £40. Club members are asked to do their best to promote this evening as all proceeds are going to the mini-bus appeal.

Great Support from Glasgow Irish for our appeal

16 March 2010

The Harps minibus appeal is £1500 to the good after the club served up a winner with visitors to the St Patrick's celebrations at Glenconner Park in Royston.

Thanks to the generosity and time of members and supporters, Harps volunteers were able to feed hundreds of people at the event, which was organised by Garngad Irish Heritage Group.

We're now a total of £4000 closer to our fund target of £15,000 after a round of bag packing, dances and generous donations from other Gaelic sports groups and associations.
However, the campaign to get the Harps back on the road has a long way to go and we're asking everyone to pull out the stops.

While we were really cooking indoors, Ciaran Kearney and members of the Harps Youth Group were busy putting youngsters through their football  paces.

There's now a minibus appeal page up and running on this website. You can donate online and the committee is looking for more innovative fundraisers.

Mini bus appeal off to a good start

02 March 2010

It's a long road ahead but the substantial shortfall in the insurers valuation and the cost of a new bus was cut by £500 on Sunday when the underage hurlers and camogs got a great response from the Glasgow public at a bag packing at Tesco in the east end.

The club will be meeting soon to outline their plans to raise the shortfall.  It already seems certain that the proceeds of their annual charity dinner in April which funds all of the club community development activities will now have to be set aside to finance the new bus.  "It is disappointing that we have to go down this road as the dinner usually covers all of our coaching, equipment and youth leadership activities for the next twelve months, but the priority for us is transport.  We are not set up like a traditional GAA club in Ireland.  Our children are spread all over the city so transport is  the key " explained the club chairman.  Due to lack of games locally the bus is also used regularly to take teams over to Ireland for games. In the coming weeks the under 12 hurlers and under 10s footballers had planned to go on trips. These have now been shelved until the bus is replaced.
The club have an online appeal set up . You can make a donation by clicking this link Club Everyclick Page.

Mini bus destruction casts shadow over club

23 February 2010

The club mini bus was bunt out in an act of wanton vandalism in the early hours of Monday morning in the Lambhill area of Glasgow.  A full statement relating to the incident will be issued by the club executive committee in the near future.

Fundraisers are Big Hits!

14 September 2009

Included in this weekend's busy schedule were two fundraising events.

The first was a race night and ceili run by the U8s, 9s and 10s on the south side.  This event was very successful and raised a massive £1,650, including a generous donation of £300 from Coneworx.

The club would like to thank all those whose efforts contributed to the night's success, including our race master Jim Ward, our ticket sellers, the tellers, the cashiers, the ceili band who put on a sterling performance, the staff at the Railway club and most of all the people who turned out to support the club.

The second event was a dance hosted by the Garngad Irish in Royston.  This turned out to be a great night with a lively crowd.  The club would like to thank this group for their ongoing support of Tir Conaill Harps.

Thanks to Jack and Sally

10 September 2009

The club would like to thank the efforts of Jack Trow and Sally Lafferty who have left the club's Managemnt Committe to concentrate their time and efforts on establishing the newly formed Harps Community Project. Between them they have given over fifteen years voluntary service to the club and we really appreciate all they have done for the club in this time.

We now welcome back Janice Aitken to the Management Committe were she will assume the role of club treasurer.

 Good Luck Tommy

18 August 2009

Due to the decision of the GAA in Ireland not to continue to fund the post of Development and Health promotion Officer we have had to release Tommy Main from his contract. We are grateful for the years of service he gave to the club both as a volunteer and in latter years as an employee.

On the positive side Tommy has been able to find employment through a new initiative, the Harps Community Project. This project will develop various community initiatives with young people in the city. It was set up by some club members to ensure that the years of award winning work done by the GAA club in areas of social exclusion and poverty would continue, albeit in a different format. Although we have had great success over the years on the field of play, it is our work with young people at grass roots level which marks us out differently from a traditional sports club. We are grateful for the support of the Irish government who recognised the unique work being done by the club in this area.

There is a general club meeting to discuss these changes and the implications they will have for the club in the Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre, on Thursday 27th August, at 7pm.

 Valuing Volunteers Course

12 August 2009

Please find below details of the upcoming "Valuing Your Sports Volunteers" workshop taking place at Maryhill Community Centre on Tuesday 25th August from 6.30 - 9.30pm.

This course will help you to recruit more volunteers, motivate, retain, reward and manage them even more effectively.

This course is also a requirement for clubs looking to achieve the second level of Clubmark Accreditation.

By participating in this workshop, you will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of the importance of volunteers in English Sport
  • promote coordinated planning for volunteer recruitment, retention, reward and recognition
  • identify what clubs and sports organisations should do to prepare themselves to receive new young volunteers, and the type of roles they can undertake
  • help build support mechanisms and links
  • gain commitment for ongoing volunteer development

The usual cost of this course is £20 per person but please be aware that funding may be available to clubs with Junior Sections.

 Fantastic Turnout at Annual Awards

01 May 2009

An amazing 470 tickets were sold for the annual dinner, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, which was an fantastic achievement by the organising a committee in such difficult economic times. But not only that but a recognition by the business community in our city of how important a role the Harps play in the lives of so many young people especially in the many areas of social deprivation we operate in.

The awards was all about celebrating the role of the volunteer in the club and four of the best in the club got their due recognition. In all fifteen volunteers were nominated for the 2008 award and they also must have been proud that fellow club members and players took the time to nominate them to show their appreciation of voluntary effort.  We were delighted to have Tom Daly, president of the Ulster Council as our guest of honour.  We are assured that the strong links between the club and the GAA in Ulster will continue to prosper in the years ahead.

The evening opened by a stunning sixteen hand display of Irish Dancing from the Caroline Greene school and continued with a spot by Down based comedian Big O.  After a presentation by the pupils from St.Michael's and Thorntree primary schools on their joint anti sectarianism work it was onto the auction, which alone raised over £6,000.  The evening concluded into the small hours with music by the Belfast band The Chevys.

Janice Aitken was a worthy recipient to the John Porter Award. Janice is pictured with John's son Kevin and Awards Committee Chairman, Tommy Main.  The other award winners were; Coach of the year-George Hay, Young Person of the year-Adele Clark and partner of the year- Seamus Shields of Advance Construction (Scotland).

Adele Pictured with Tom Daly above is Seamus Shields of Advance Construction (Scotland) Seamus is the first recipient of the Partner of the Year Award. This award is to recognise a sponsor or agency who supports or works best with the club. Although it was a difficult choice with so many groups supporting the club in 2008, no one can question the effort Seamus puts in on our behalf.  Although a sponsor and supporter for many years, it was the effort he put in to make our 2008 dinner such a success both financially and socially that made the decision that much easier for the judges.
Adele Clark is pictured below with City Treasurer, Baillie Gordon Matheson who presented her with the Young Person of the Year Award at.  Adele was actively involved in organsing the club's youth committee including being involved in drawing up the club's drug and alcohol policy and arranging an exchange with a youth group in Roscommon.  Adele also plays for the ladies football team and coaches the under 10s at her former school, St.Mungo's Primary, in Townhead.
George Hay pictured below with guest of honour Tom Daly, President of the Ulster Council of the GAA, being presented with the coach of the year award.  George got his award mainly for his team winning the Scottish Women's Shinty championship last year, but many nominated him for his tireless effort of bringing the players from a group of novices, there to make up the numbers, to becoming the best team in the country.

 Club Coaches Visit Ulster

26 January 2008

Our club community coaches are pictured with Eugene Young at the Ulster Coaching Conference.

Eleven of the club's community coaches attended the conference at the Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown and also visited the O'Donovan Ross club, in Magharefelt, in Co.Derry to look at their underage football nursery programme. The club have one of the best reputations for developing games at youth level and watching them coaching between eighty and 100 under 8s certainly provided our coaches with food for thought.  The coaches also used the weekend to discuss team management and coaching for the coming year within the club.

The delegates also got the opportunity to take in the McKenna cup final between Donegal and Queens University and attend a club funtion in the hotel.

Club Award Dinner Performers Announced

04 December 2008

The club is delighted to announce more details of it's biggest ever awards dinner, which next year will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Saturday 25th April.

The organising committee recognised that to keep raising the bar in terms of the standard and entertainment value then we need to bring in the best performers that our budget will allow.  Headlining the bill will be the Chevys Showband from Belfast and the evening will be MC'd by top Irish comedian, Big O. There will be a performance of Irish Dancing, auction and an opportunity to win a week’s Holiday for four including flights to Playa Flamence, Costa Blanca, Spain.

The committee also acknowledged that it is a an expensive night for the rank and file member and with the new awards being launched at the dinner they wanted to ensure that it was affordable for everyone to be there to acknowledge the work done by our volunteers.  Despite the increase in running costs and bring in top artistes they have decided to keep the tables at last year's prices of £400 for a table of 10.  There will be a limited number of individual tickets on sale @ £40.

The nomination forms for the categories of Volunteer Awards will be available for download from here or from team managers or Management Committee members from next week.

In terms of organisation this will be the biggest event ever taken on by the club so please do everything you can to promote the evening among your family and friends.

If you think you can help sell tables or pull in some sponsorship please contact tom@conaill.fsnet.co.uk for more details.

New Club Award Scheme Announced

20 November 2008

The club will be launching a new award scheme to recognise and celebrate various forms of volunteerism in the club.  We will continue with the very popular John Porter Community Volunteer Award, but will also add two new awards for coach of the year and Young Person of the Year.  These awards will be presented at our annual dinner dance which will be held in April, 2009.  The nomination forms will be available for download from this site shortly after the launch of the Awards Scheme in January 2009.
