Semi Final Stormer

21 June 2010

After a couple of recent disappointing league performances the Harps were determined to show that they are a team to be reckoned with in the Valerie Fraser semi final.  They did not disappoint!

The Harps got off to a strong start pushing forward from the throw up and looking like they meant business.  They made the most of this early pressure in the 7th minute getting the ball to Fiona who was about 15 yards out from goal on the left wing.  She turned well and struck a powerful shot into goal taking the Harps into the lead. continued to put on the pressure and Bam Bam came close in 17 minutes.  However 3 minutes later Orla made it 2-0 with a cracking shot from 20 yards out on the left wing.  GMA tried to respond, however their attacks were ably managed by the Harps defence who looked confident.  Siobhan in particular had an excellent game.  In the 2nd half both teams had some attacks in the early minutes however the Harps won the midfield battle with strong perormances from Yvonne and Orla.  In the 47th minute Fiona put the GMA goalie under pressure causing her to lose the ball, Fiona then dribbled the ball round the goalie before finding the net.  11 minutes later Fiona got her hat trick once again taking the ball round the goal keeper. Not content with 3, Fiona made it 4 (and 1 more than Andy) a minute later and celebrated with a dance!  Bam Bam was determined to get into the goal action and was unlucky to see a great shot from a tight angle hit the crossbar in the 62 minute. However 3 minutes later that determination paid off when she scored after taking it round several players in the D. Orla rounded off the scoring with her 2nd and the team's 7th, receiving a pass from Kirstie and walking it into goal.

We now meet Glengarry in the final of the Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup for the 3rd year in a row.  On the evidence of today's performance they are well capable of winning back the cup! Every player on the pitch gave their all.  It was a proud day to be a TCH player, coach or supporter.

This was such a team performance that George named The Team as his player of the match.

Pastures New for Division 2

30 May 2010

Today, the Division 2 team made their first trip across to the East Coast to Musselburgh to take on a Forth Camanachd side, who dropped down from Division 1 at the beginning of the season. After losing the home fixture 0 - 5, the Tir Conaill side were determined to put up a tougher challenge on this occasion.

To say the grass was long at the pitch in Musselburgh would be an understatement - I'd have to estimate it as at least mid calf height - not ideal for shinty, however as we'd travelled as agreed the best thing to do was to continue with the fixture.

The game started quickly and for the first few minutes people struggled to get to grips with the unusual surface, however TCH soon found their stride and took control of the game, with Siobhan Martin, Sara Roche and Julie O'Brien making use of the big hitting to pump balls into the forward line. After several missed opportunities, Sara carried the ball up the left hand side, before a pass to Charlene Chung was successfully delivered. Charlene then displayed some grit and determination, challenging for the ball and slotting it through to Cassie Dorrian, who put Tir Conaill in the lead at half time, with a score of 0 - 1.

The day almost ended there, with the referee deeming the pitch unsafe at half time, yet both captains were insistent that the game continue. TCH made use of their subs, with Maria Cosgrave making her first appearance for the club, and Rebecca McPherson joining her on the field as the team continued to press for victory.

Forth were determined to not let an opportunity to remain undefeated slip them by. The TCH defence of Mary Dowds and Sarah Murdin coped admirable with an onslaught of Forth players - some interesting challenges were made, leaving TCH battered and bruised. Eventually the pressure of the Forth attack, and the unbelievable long grass, resulted in a penalty for Forth - luckily for TCH, Ruth Bordoli was unable to convert for Forth. Play passed from end to end, both teams chasing one last score, until eventually Forth knocked one through and Holly Webster converted for the home side, with the final score of 1 - 1.

This was an encouraging result for the TCH side, with the first points added to the league table since the first day of the season, and credit must be given to all as the conditions weren't the best.

Player of the match was a tough choice, but Julie O'Brien must be rewarded for her endeavor.

Highland Touring

25 May 2010

Sunday was the most dreaded game of the shinty season.  It was not the opposition that induced this loathing but the prospect of driving a 260 mile round trip through the caravan filled highlands.  Travel arrangements got off to a bad start when our St Andrews contingent's train timetable reading skills failed them and they missed their Dundee-Perth connection.  Once this had been fixed by an expensive taxi ride we were all on our way; one bus load from Glasgow, one car load from Perth and one straggler who had just been on the West Highland way.

The game started a bit sluggishly as players tried to shake off the 4 hours of sitting and it was Glengarry who opened the scoring.  Fiona Mathie soon put things back on track with a well taken shot on her left side.  The first half finished at 1-1.

Erin's first strike of the ball from the throw up in the second half was a cracking 60-70 yard cross pitch ball that set the forwards up for an immediate attack on goal.  Only problem was she hadn't quite cottoned on to the whole changing sides thing and the hit was the wrong way up the field, so it was the Glengarry forwards who were on the attack.  Fortunately they were as surprised as us and so they didn't capitalise on the gift.  Still, fair play to her, it was a brilliant attacking ball.

Fiona opened the score in the second half, skilfully taking a rebounded ball in the air.  Glengarry replied quickly leaving both sides pressing for the decider in the last 20 minutes of the game.  That decider did not come and the final score line was 2-2.  The Harps were content to take a point away from this game having won the home tie.

Fiona is George's choice for Player of the Match.

Bells Shinty Battlefield

3 May 2010

Yesterday the Harps shinty team were playing for the top spot on the National First Division at Bell's Sports Centre in Perth.  The game was a battle of the midfield and, all credit to Badenoch, on this occasion they won that battle, with a first class performance from Jane Nicol and Kirsty Deans.

The Harps defence stood up well to the Badenoch midfield firing power but a double deflection off-footed the Harps goalie at the end of the first half and the ball found its way to the bottom right corner of the goal.

The Harps were still in the game though and looked forward to a second half with the wind and slope in our favour, but we just couldn't secure the dominant hand.  The Badenoch goalie was busier in the second half but that elusive goal just wouldn't come.

The game ended 1-0 and so the Harps now sit in second spot, 1 point behind the league leaders GMA.  With only 3 of this season's 9 games played the league is still in our own hands.

The most positive part of the day was the debut of 3 new players; Erin, Hannah and Rebecca who all impressed.  Erin's preparation for her first shinty game was a 5 minute puc about before the game, so her shinty playing career has now lasted 75 minutes and she only kicked the ball once.  However it looks like she is up for adding shinty success to her camogie and footballing talents (Have a look at our 2009 Festival Photos to see her do the double at last year's Feile na mBan).  So welcome to the Harps lassies, hope to be seeing lots more of you all.

South Team FINALLY Realise Cup Dream

12 April 2010

Every sports team dreams of winning silverware.  Last year the South team only dropped 1 point in their unbeaten league run.  Due to the league structure the title required the Harps to play off against the winners of the South West league for the South League Cup.  This play off fixture turned out to be more elusive than the Scarlet Pimpernel.

However this weekend Janice was seen mugging the captain of the 2008 league winners in the car park after the GMA away game and has thus secured the cup at last.  In times of need the captain sometimes just needs to step up.

So pictured below are some long awaited smiles all round.

Shinty Lassies have Fun in the Sun

11 April 2010

Today the Harps shinty team played two games without scoring.  However if you think this was a bad day you are well and truly mistaken.

Today the Harps really stepped up to the plate (or whatever the equivalent shinty expression is).  Every player on the field gave their all in the first game.  This article could sing the praises of everyone but so as not to hog the whole website we will just mention a few of our players who stepped up from the South Team.  Vanessa played her first game of club shinty today, which is a world away from university shinty, and played it in a first division game.  Kirsty had the best game of her career against Cowal and Bute a few weeks ago, but today she racked it up a good few notches further.  Sarah has been vying for a first team place since the middle of last season and had a great game in the 2009 cup final.  Today she had an absolute stormer, despite having a lot to deal with. And finally Julie; the back line is definately calling.

As 9 of our second team players were involved in the first game another hour in the sun was just not going to happen today.  Things will be different in the South's next draw as they will be starting with fresh legs and the experience they gained today.

Coach's choice for player of the game goes to Sarah Murdin for the first game and Oonagh Collins for the second.

The two players who should hang their heads in shame are the two that didn't get ice creams for everyone. Captain as well.  Hurry back Yvonne!

Shinty Roundup

28 March 2010

Sunday afternoon started with the first division tie against Glengarry.  In the final game of last season the Harps held Glengarry to a draw, but have been unable to secure a win since the 2008 cup final.  This all changed today with a 3-2 victory for the Harps. Scoring honours go to Aisling Gribbin (2), who was also George's choice for player of the match, and Fiona Mathie, but this was a team performance that everyone can be proud of.

The next game was a second division tie against Forth Camanchd.  Forth have voluntarily dropped from the first division and have already secured two convincing wins this season.  So this was probably the toughest tie of the season for the Harps South team.  Forth came out the winners but the Harps can take a lot of positives from the game.  This was a much improved team performance, with Siobhan Martin getting George's choice of player of the match for the second week running.

Both teams now have two weeks to prepare for the next ties against Glasgow Mid Argyll A & B teams.

South Shinty Team Disappointment

21 March 2010

The Harps South team were disappointed by a 1-0 loss to Cowal & Bute this afternoon.  Cowal scored an early speculative goal from long distance in a first half that saw chances at both ends of the pitch.  The second half was dominated by the Harps, having 80% of the possession in front of the Cowal goal mouth, but the Harps just weren't able to convert chances into goals.  Credit has to go to the Cowal defence for staying solid under immense pressure from the Harps.

The game saw some excellent individual performances, with some players standing out for giving 110% effort.  George's choice for Player of the Match goes to the team captain Oonagh Collins, who had a brilliant game at full back.  However the team performance has lots of room for improvement, as we just didn't play for each other today.  The Harps have plenty to work on at training on Tuesday ahead of next weeks double header that sees the Harps in  a first division tie against Glengarry and a second division tie against Forth.

First Win for South Shinty Team

15 March 2010

The Harps South shinty team got their season off to a cracking start with a 4-0 win over Dunadd on an exceptionally sunny Sunday 7th March.

Goal scoring honours go to Cassie Dorrian, Oonagh Collins and Siobhan Martin (2).  Shiv was also George's choice for player of the match.  The team can see a pattern in Shiv's goal scoring career and are expecting to see 4 go in next game, even if she is at half back.

The Harps didn't have it all our own way.  Dunadd started the second half strongly and had the Harps under pressure for the first ten minutes. The Harps defence did well to keep them out, as a Dunadd goal when the score line was 2-0 may have made all the difference to the result.

The South team are now looking forward to tour away tie to Cowal & Bute on Sunday 21st.  Not least because wee get a wee sail on the ferry.

Shinty Scores on the Doors

21 September 2009

The Harps first team ended the season with a 4-1 win away to Forth Camanachd in Mussleburgh.

Oonagh Collins is proving to be a force to be reckoned with at full forward.  Her strength in holding up the ball in the forward line assisted Roisin Campbell to her first hat-trick of the season.  Oonagh also got on the score sheet, putting away the harps second of the day from a well crafted corner move.

The Harps had it far from all their own way.  Forth's Jo Gorniack responded to the Harps two first half goals with a cracking shot that put Forth right back in the game.  The second half saw some determined play which kept the Harps defence busy, producing a couple of goal line scrambles early on in the half.  Jenny Smith's shots from midfield tested both goalkeeper and defence throughout the second half.

The captain's choice for player of the game was Fiona Mathie, who gave a brilliant attacking mid-field performance.

It was a great game to finish off the season.

Shinty Team are Disappointed

14 September 2009

Our shinty team gave it everything at the weekend but were narrowly defeated in the scottish cup final 2-1.

George and the lassies are obviously disappointed but should be proud of what they have achieved in recent years.  They have made the cup final two years in a row,  they are currently sitting in second position in the national league and are in a play off position for the South second division title.

Tir Conaill are now up there with the best in the world of women's shinty, while remaining a team that welcomes players of all abilities.

Harps Finish Unbeaten

06 September 2009

The Harps South shinty team came out 1-0 winners against Linlithgow in today's home tie.  The game was close throughout, with both teams having chances to go ahead.  The goal that sealed the result came in the 56th minute of play from a Roisin Campbell shot.

The Harps finish, unbeaten this season, in top position in the South Central Second Division.  The team's next game will be on 25th October when they play the winners of the South West Second Division for the overall South title.

For the second week on the trot Siobhan Martin gets the coach's choice for Player of the Match.

Well done the Harps!

Shinty Scores on the Doors

31 August 2009

Sunday's home match against Glengarry finished in  a 2-2 draw.

Roisin Campbell opened the scoaring for the Harps early on when she shot into the goal area and put away a rebound from the goallie.  Glengarry's Sarah Corrigal then put two away before half time for Glengarry.

The second half was them all about the Harps fighting to get back in it.  Finally Marian Holohan put away a cracking shot from the left of goal to even things up in the last minute of the game.

The draw probably puts the league title beyond us this year but the scene is now set for the cup tie on September 12th.

Coach's choice for Player of the Match goes to Siobhan Martin.

Harps Top South Central Shinty League

21 August 2009

The Tir Conaill Harps South team secured a 6-3 away win at Linlithgow last night.  This puts them in unassailable position at the top of the South Central League.  This means they now will play the winner of the South West league for the South of Scotland league title.

Well done to everyone.   This is the first year that we have had good numbers of South team players at training and available to play matches.  So it is great to see them do so well.

Goal scoring honours go to Alison Barclay (4), Mairi Molloy (1) and Roisin Campbell (1),  putting Alison at the top of the South scorers table.  Caitlin McGrath was picked by the coach as Player of the Match, after a brilliant performance in the back line.

Argyll Tournament Round Up

09 August 2009

Today's shinty tournament in Argyll started well with a 3-1 win over the Cowal & Bute B team, followed by a 2-0 win over a young Inveraray team.  The match against the C&B A team was much closer with the Harps securing a 1-0 win in a game where both teams had their chances.  The Harps then had a change of fortunes as Kintyre recorded a convincing 4-0 win over us in the final game of the group stage.   However the Harps had done enough to secure a place in the final with Kintyre.

The second meeting was a much more even affair.  Both teams started well but it was Kintyre that opened the scoring, taking advantage of a lack of concentration from the Harps keeper.  The 1st half ended with Kintyre at 1-0, but the Harps found their second wind and came out strongly for the final ten minutes.  Caroline Hogan levelled the score before the winner came from Charlene Chung in the last minute of the game.  A brilliant time to score her debut goal.

So Tir Conaill managed to sail off with the medals and a good day was had by all.

Thanks go to Cowal & Bute shinty team for organising the day, especially the barbeque which was grand.

 Shinty Honours 2008

07 August 2009

This is a bit of a better late than never article. Pictured below are the players who picked up the shinty honours for 2008.  Well done to Hilda and Emma.

Shinty Player of 2008: Hilda Dooley

Shinty Most Improved Player 2008: Emma Rodgers

 Lights, Camera, Action!

08 July 2009

Last night BBC Alba joined the shinty lassies for their training session on Glasgow Green.  Alba are making a short film to show at the interval of the Balliemore cup final on Saturday July 18th, so the Harps did their best to provide some classic footage.

Fiona Matthie made a special effort and whacked the presenter, Cailean, across the hands with her stick, although was later taken out by him.  No not to dinner, he totally upended her in a very dodgy tackle.  The things we will do for television stardom!

So, if you want to see a few TCH shirts in glorious technicolor tune in to BBC Alba on the afternoon of the 18th.

Thanks to the BBC Alba producer, Brendan, for an enjoyable evening.

 Clash of the Camans

22 June 2009

Saturday saw TCH and the Smith sisters (shortly to appear at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut) take the field in the Marine Harvest "Clash of the Camans" challenge match in Fort William.  TCH and Glengarry were invited to take part as last year's cup and national league winners, respectively.

The Harps went into the match missing six of their eight named first team players but were bolstered by guest players Katy and Jenni Smith (on a free loan from Forth Camanachd) and the return to the team of long lost player Christine McCrimmon.  Glengarry also had their troubles to bear in fielding a team for this summer Saturday fixture.

The Harps started strongly.  The midfield took control and the Harps had chance after chance in the first 15 minutes.  Some good saves from the Glengarry goalie Elaine Cameron denied the Harps from taking an early lead.  However Glengarry forward Sarah Corrigal replied with a powerful run, scoring in what proved to be Glengarry's only real attack of the first half.  The Harps did their best to equalise and wave after wave of attack was finally rewarded by a Fiona Mathie goal just before half time.

The Harps started the second half in the same way, buoyed by the equaliser, but it did not seem to be their day.  Attack after attack was to prove fruitless.  Glengarry enjoyed a period of pressure in the last quarter and some excellent defending by Hilda, Sarah, Jenni and Shiv soaked up the pressure.  However a few minutes before full time Corgi once again proved too strong, leaving the final score 2-1 to Glengarry.

The final score was a disappointment but the lassies that made the trip can be proud of their efforts, especially as many were playing out of position or in the 1st team for first time this season.  I think Roisin in especial is hoping that this will be her first and last goalie appearance of the season/rest of her life.

 Grand Night for Shinty Teams

11 June 2009

First up on Wednesday night was the Harps' South team.  The Harps put in one of the best South team performances of the season, but GMA came out all sticks blazing and the final result of 2 apiece was probably a fair reflection of the game.

Goal scoring honours go (as ever) to Alison Barclay, who is having a storming season in the front line and currently sits a mile ahead of the pack on the South Central Division Goal scorers table with 9 goals this season.

Coach's player of the match went to Janice Aitken, who denied GMA's goal attempts repeatedly and, never being  afraid of using her best assets, put her belly to good use in providing an impassable barrier to the opposition on more than one occasion.

The South team still sit 4 points clear at the top of the table with only one team left who can deny them the first position spot.  The first of the two Linlithgow ties is scheduled for August 2nd.

The national team seemed to have a slower start and found themselves 1 goal down early in the first half.  However they absorbed the pressure and came out in the second half to give a brilliant performance.  Fiona Mathie provided the two goals that sealed the tie but the GMA defence were under fire from all angles.

Aisling Gribbin was the coach's Player of the Match choice, in a game where there were some excellent performances and some stunning moments of skill on display from both sides.

The national league is still in our own hands.  There are two games left to play and two wins will either secure the league title or force a play off with Glengarry for the title.

 Cup Final Here We Come!

08 June 2009

For the third year in a row Tir Conaill battled with Forth Camanachd for a place on the Valerie Fraser cup final. We are delighted to report that the harps won the battle with a score line of 4-2, although the war is far from over as we once again meet Glengarry in the final.

The Harps took an early lead with a Fiona Mathie goal but Forth soon pulled one back.  Orla Coughlan provided the harps 2nd putting them 1 ahead at the half way mark.

The Harps looked the stronger team and Fiona put some daylight between the two teams with a cracking narrow angled goal at the start of the 2nd half.  Orla added another soon after and it looked like the harps were pulling away.  Forth's captain, Katie Smith (who had a cast removed from her hand the day before) had other ideas and put one away for Forth. This put them right back in the game.  It looked like the Harps had sealed it with a 5th goal about 5 minutes from the end but the Forth goalie made a stunning diving save.

Hilda Dooley was the well deserved Coach's Player of the Match.

This is a busy week for the Harps and it continues with a double header against GMA at the High School (across from Gartnavel Hospital) on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.  This is a must win match for both our national division team and our south division team.  The Harps are sitting 2 points adrift of Glengarry in the national division and need this one to even things out.  The South team are sitting 4 points clear of the pack but there is still a long way to go and GMA will be out to bag their first points of the season.

 Shinty Scottish Cup Semi

04 June 2009

This Sunday sees the Harps travel to the Stirling University pitches at Bridge of Allen for the 2009 Valerie Fraser Cup semi-final.

This is a bit of a Groundhog Day experience as we are drawn against Forth, who we played in the semi in 2007 and 2008.  In 2007 Forth won the tie and went on to win the cup.  In 2008 it was Tir Conaill who won the tie and then cup.  So we are hoping for a repeat of 2008.

The Harps are fielding a strong team this year, with Oonagh Collins, Mariann Holohan, Aisling Henessey and Caroline Graham all being strong additions to the team we put out last year.

So please wish George and the lassies well for Sunday and, if you can make it to Bridge of Allen for 3 p.m., come along and lend your support.

Doon the Watter fur the Shinty

31 May 2009

The TCH South team had our annual trip doon the watter this Sunday. The game saw the first appearance of Ann MacLeod, who made her debut in the forward line. We hope it will be the first of many appearances.

Cowal & Bute fixtures are always close affairs when both teams field their full strength sides.  Due to a bit of a miscount TCH tried to field a team plus 1 but when the mistake was discovered (when we found ourself short of a ferry ticket) Roisin Campbell was dropped.  The team being concerned that she might pick up an injury before the main event next weekend, i.e. the Cream Tea.

The Harps started well and had the best of the play initially, but C&B opened the scoring after about 10 minutes and then looked the more dangerous side for the rest of the 1st half.  Full credit goes to Jill Moore, Sarah Murdin, Katherine McEleavy and Emma Rodgers who found themselves soaking up the pressure in defence.

The Harps came out strongly in the 2nd half and equalised with a goal that we will credit to Mairi Molloy, but it took a wicked deflection from a C&B defender.  The Harps continued to have the best of the 2nd half with Alison Barclay claiming the 2nd goal to put us in the lead.  Mairi then came close to a 2nd when she rattled the cross bar  C&B fought back and had periods where they had sustained pressure on the Harps defence.  However Siobhan Martin (yes you heard right) sealed the result with a bullet of a shot from 30-40 yards out that flew through the defence and into the back of the net.  C&B were a bit confused that a team that was 2-1 up broke in to a level of cheering normally reserved for cup final winners but this was a

Shivy Boscoe Goal

and it has been 9 years in the making.

Player of the match goes to Mairi Molloy.

 Scores on the Doors

24 May 2009

The Harps South Shinty team travelled to Aberdeen for a Challenge Cup game on Sunday.  Aberdeen came out the victors in the 3-1 result.

Tir Conaill lost full back Mel Eggleton to a fairly severe tackle early on in the first half.  The team battled well and at half time it was all square at 0-0.  Aberdeen had the best of the second half and eventually proved too strong for the Harps.

On the up side Sarah Murdin picked up her first shinty goal and was the Coach's Player of the Match, with George also picking out Katherine McEleavy in goal for a mention. Our young players did very well, especially Caitlin McGrath who dealt with a lot of pressure in back line in the second half.

 International Shinty Training Squad Announced

13 May 2009

The Scotland women’s training squad of thirty players for the shinty/camogie international against Ireland in October has been announced. The pool will be whittled down to a final 20 later in the year.

Tir Conaill players selected are; Oonagh Collins, Yvonne Connaughton, Orla Coughlan, Hilda Dooley, Aisling Gribbon, Marian Holohan, Fiona Mathie.

Congratulations to the lassies and good luck in making the final cut.

 Double Shinty Hat-trick

19 April 2009

Orla Coughlan and Alison Barclay continued their form by both bagging another hat-trick in today's 1st division 5-0 win over Forth and 2nd division 3-0 win over Cowal & Bute.  Joining Orla on the score sheet are Mariann Coughlan, who stormed through from the midfield to score her first goal for the Harps, and Fiona Matthie who scored her second of the season.

The back lines on both teams recorded their first clean sheets of the season, so well done on that one lassies.

Orla and Alison get the coach's player of the game award.

Today's results keep us at the top of the 1st division on goal difference and put as 2 points clear at the top of the 2nd division. Although Linlithgow could close that 2 point gap next Sunday if they beat GMA B.

Shinty teams are unashamedly quite pleased

29 March 2009

Both our women's shinty teams secured their first wins of the season on Sunday with two great team performances.  The 1st team ran out 4-1 winners against the Glasgow Mid Argyll 1st team.  Our 2nd team won 4-2 against the GMA 2nd team.

GMA are a very good side.  Their B team have been league winners since they set up and the A team beat us in the last game of last season to prevent us winning the league.  So this is a win that all the players can be proud of.

Orla Coughlan scored a hat trick in the 1st game and Alsion Barclay scored one in the 2nd.

Coach's choice for player of the match were Mariann Holohan for 1st game and Mel Eggleton for the 2nd.

Well done lassies! Keep up this form for the Forth and Cowal & Bute home games on the 19th.

First Shinty Game of the Season

23 March 2009

The women's shinty team had their first National Division 1 outing this weekend with an away draw to Glengarry.  It was another close run battle between the two teams, who last met each other in the cup final last year.  However, this time it was the Garry lassies who came out 2-1 winners.

The Tir Conaill team included 4 new players from the world of university shinty; Aisling Hennesy, Caroline Graham, Marian Holohan and Noreen O'Keefe.  So welcome and well done to our new players.

The coach's player of the match choice was Yvonne Connaughton.  Well done to Yvonne in getting your name at the top of the honours roll for this season.

Tir Conaill Women's Shinty Team come within One Point of the National League Title

10 November 2008

The Tir Conaill women's shinty team finished their season with a hard fought game against their Glasgow rivals Glasgow Mid Argyll.  However this was not to be our year for the league title as GMA won the day with a 4-2 win, leaving them to contest the title in a play off game against Glengarry.

Although disappointed on the day the team can feel proud of the progress they have made this year, winning the Scottish cup title, taking the national league competition to the wire and staying in contention for the South Division 2 league till the end of the season.

We can now look forward to next year knowing that TCH are now real contenders for the 2009 season.

Tir Conaill Women's Shinty Team Prepare for Last Game of the Season
30 October 2008

Sunday 2nd November will see Tir Conaill Harps women's shinty A & B teams play their last game of the season.

The B team are up first with a 1 o'clock start at Yoker's Peterson Park against  the Glasgow Mid Argyll A team.  A win would secure them a runner's up place in the South Division 2, but the oposition are the league winners and so the Harps will need to be up to the challenge.  The team have done exceptionally well this year with many players in their first season.  Much credit needs to go to the backbone of the team Grace McBride, Mel Eggleton and Jill Moore.

Next up are the A team at 2.30 pm. This game is a National League Division 1 decider against Glasgow Mid Argyll A team.  A win in this would see us end the season on a high with the cup and league double.

Earlier in the season the Harps secured their first Scottish Cup win against Glengarry. The final between two of the sides had promised to be close - and so it proved as Glasgow-based TCH and three-times former cup winners Glengarry produced an absorbing contest which remained in the balance until the final whistle.

Harps looked sharp in attack early on and they had a cutting edge in the shape of Fiona Mathie, who struck twice in the opening 20 minutes to put her side in control.  Glengarry regrouped at the interval and pressed forward in the second half, reducing the arrears when Sarah Corrigal neatly finished off a sweeping movement 10 minutes after the break.  Tir Conaill came under further pressure but Hilda Dooley marshalled their defensive effort superbly to protect their lead.

As time ran out, both goalkeepers produced some fine saves. Joanne Gillanders kept Glengarry's hopes alive by twice thwarting Harps' counter-attacks - and at the other end in the final minute Janice Aitken pulled off a splendid stop to deny the north side a last-gasp equaliser.  TCH captain Roisin Campbell stepped forward to accept the trophy from sponsor Peter Gow at the end of a great advert for women's shinty - and Glengarry's efforts were reflected in Sarah Corrigal's player-of-the-match award.

Five of TCH's players, and coach George Hay continued their success in October as part of the victorious Scottish squad in their win over an Ireland select in the compromise rules game in Kilkenny. Only Hilda Dooley had previously represented the Harps in this game. So it was a proud moment for Catherine McGourty, Orla Coughlan, Yvonne Connaughton and Fiona Mathie as well as for the club. The contribution they all made to this game is a reflection of how much the team has progressed in recent years.
