St Agnes' do Glasgow Proud

08 June 2009

An action packed two day trip seen the gaelic footballers of St.Agnes primary school take in a tour of Croke Park and it's museum, play a challenge match aginst Ballymun Kickhams, be coached by former Dublin captain, Paddy Christie and attend the Dublin V Meath Leinster championship match, which was played in front of 75,000 spectators.

The children were accompanied by their teacher and team manager, Fi McGinn, club chairman, Willie Doherty and Development Officer, Tommy Main. All of the children had a great time and were a great credit to the club and their school. This was commented on by a number of people the group came into contact with. The club hope to strenghten the link with Ballymun by hosting a return trip in the near future.

On a sad note, the school will close it's gates for the last time this summer due to local government cut backs.  We are hopeful that many of the children who took part in the trip will still have an interest in gaelic games and continue to stay involved in the club.

St Agnes' off to Dublin

30 April 2009

The club were saddened to hear of the impending closure of St.Agnes's Primary school, in Lambhill.  The school has had good links with the club over the past four years, mainly through the efforts of teacher Fidelma McGinn who currently manages several of our underage football teams.

We had arranged an exchange with a plan of linking with a school in Dublin when news came through of the council's decision to close the school.  This ruled out the exchange but we decided not to disappoint the children and to go ahead with a trip to Dublin on June 6th.

Although the programme has yet to be finalised the children will be taking in the Dublin V Meath Leinster championship match, which will be played in front of an attendance of up to 82,000 in Croke Park.  In addition, the children will also be going on a tour of the stadium and visit the croke park museum.  To help defray the costs the children will be bag packing at Asda, in Maryhill this Saturday.  If you want to help out just turn up from 10am.

Another school facing closure is Victoria Primary  in the south side who were over the year involved in a lot of activities with the club including the anti-drugs initiatives and school exchanges to Limerick. We also recruited quite a few players from the school including Stuart Grierson, who currently plays in the senior football team.  We wish the staff and pupils of both schools all the best in their new schools.

A six week block of gaelic football coaching in five primary schools in the greater Royston area of the city will culminate in a tournament at the Springburn Leisure Centre, on Thursday 29th January, from 10am.

Club community coach, Dom Roarty has been doing the pioneering work in Royston, St.Philomena’s, St.Roch’s, St.Mungo’s and St.Gilbert’s Primary schools.

The aim of the  programme is to introduce more children to the sport and hopefully feed them into a community club in the area for under 8s and under 10s .  We have a let in St.Roch’s Secondary school, Royston Rd, which runs on Saturday, from 11.30am to 1pm.  New members are most welcome.

We are currently looking at extending the schools programme after the event in partnership with Active Schools Coordinators and local Sports Development Officers.  Parents, club members and supporters are welcome to come along to the event and see at first hand the work Dom is doing with these children.

Football Project Launched in Royston Area

19 November 2008

A six week coaching block has started in five schools in the Royston area of the city.  Our community coach, Dom Roarty, will be working in the schools for four weeks up to Christmas and then for a furter two when the schools return after the hiolidays.  The coaching will culminate in a tournament at a north Glasgow venue.

We have now set up a community club in St.Roch's secondary, on Saturday mornings, from 11.30am, to 1.00pm, which we hope will lead to an increase in numbers of children from the area becoming involved in the club.  We appreciate the support we are receiving from James Tonner  Sports Development Officer (CRIF) - North for Culture and Sport Glasgow.
